Morzine vs Major US Ski Resorts: What Does a Week’s Skiing Really Cost?

When comparing ski holidays, it is easy to focus on the price of accommodation alone or simply the distance from home.

But the real cost of a ski trip also includes the lift pass and ski equipment and this is where the difference between skiing in the French Alps and some of America’s best-known ski resorts becomes very noticeable.

For winter 2026/27, we compared Morzine and the Portes du Soleil with three major US ski destinations:

• Aspen Snowmass
• Vail
• Jackson Hole

To keep the comparison as fair as possible, we have based the figures on the same type of holiday:

• 2 adults
• 7 nights
• 6 days skiing
• Full ski-area lift passes
• 6 days ski, boot and pole hire
• Approximately 3-star accommodation

Morzine and the Portes du Soleil

For a week in Morzine, a good-standard self-catered apartment for two adults can be found for around €1,400–€1,550 during a typical January week.

For this comparison, we have used:

Accommodation: approximately €1,485

The big advantage is the cost of the lift pass.

The official Portes du Soleil 2026/27 tariff lists the 6-day online adult pass at €352 during the main part of the winter season.

For two adults:

Lift passes: €704

And this isn’t simply a Morzine local-area pass. The full Portes du Soleil pass covers an enormous cross-border ski area with more than 600 km of skiing, 12 resorts and more than 300 pistes across France and Switzerland.

Ski equipment also remains relatively affordable.

Snow & Trek guests receive 25% off their ski hire at Alpine Sports.

That reduces the cost to approximately: €134.25 per person

or:

Ski hire for two: approximately €269

So for our two adults:

Accommodation: €1,485
Lift passes: €704
Ski hire: €269

Morzine total: approximately €2,458

That gives our couple seven nights’ accommodation, six days skiing across the full Portes du Soleil and six days of ski equipment.

Aspen Snowmass

Aspen is one of the world’s most famous ski destinations – and prices reflect that.

Accommodation is considerably more expensive than in Morzine, even before moving into Aspen’s luxury hotel and property market.

For good-standard accommodation for two adults, a realistic weekly budget is approximately:

Accommodation: €4,000–€5,000+

Aspen Snowmass encompasses four separate mountains:

• Aspen Mountain
• Aspen Highlands
• Snowmass
• Buttermilk

For 2026/27, Aspen Snowmass has introduced its Flex Pass for visitors wanting four to seven ski days.

The official 6-Day Flex Pass costs $869 per adult at the current advance-purchase price.

At current exchange rates, $869 is approximately €744.

For two adults:

Lift passes: approximately €1,488

Ski hire: €550–€700 for two

So for two adults, our approximate skiing holiday cost becomes:

Accommodation: €4,000–€5,000+
Lift passes: €1,488
Ski hire: €550–€700

Aspen Snowmass total: approximately €6,000–€7,200+

Vail

Vail is another of America’s most recognised ski resorts and one of the flagship destinations within the Epic Pass system.

Good-standard accommodation in or around Vail during the ski season can easily reach:

Accommodation: approximately €3,500–€4,000 for seven nights

Lift-pass pricing operates differently from the Portes du Soleil.

Rather than simply buying a conventional Vail six-day pass, visitors can buy an Epic Day Pass, choosing between one and seven ski days.

Importantly, to ski Vail you need the appropriate All Resorts version of the Epic Day Pass.

For winter 2026/27, a six-day All Resorts Epic Day Pass is currently around $615 excluding the designated peak dates or $726 including peak-date access.

That puts a six-day unrestricted pass at approximately €622 per adult at current exchange rates.

For two adults:

Lift passes: approximately €1,244

Vail and Epic confirm that the 2026/27 Epic Day Pass provides access to Vail and can be purchased for between one and seven days.

There are certain restricted peak dates during the 2026/27 winter – including dates around Thanksgiving, Christmas/New Year, Martin Luther King weekend and Presidents’ Day weekend – unless peak access is included.

A reasonable six-day performance equipment budget for two adults is:

Ski hire: approximately €600–€750

Vail recommends booking equipment in advance and currently advertises savings of up to 20% for advance rental bookings.

Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole has a different feel again. It is internationally famous for its steep terrain, powder skiing and big-mountain reputation.

Accommodation in the town of Jackson itself can sometimes look relatively affordable when searching online, but there is an important distinction to make.

The main ski resort is at Teton Village, approximately 20 minutes away.

For a fairer ski-resort-to-ski-resort comparison, we have therefore allowed a budget for accommodation closer to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

Accommodation: approximately €2,000–€2,500+

Jackson Hole is also different when it comes to lift tickets because it operates dynamic pricing. There isn’t one simple published six-day adult price that applies throughout the season.

For winter 2026/27, Jackson Hole’s official Early Bird sale advertises:

Single-day adult tickets from $81 and Multi-day adult tickets from $57 per day

But Jackson Hole specifically states that these are limited prices on selected dates and that the best-value tiers sell out as availability disappears.

That makes Jackson Hole particularly difficult to compare directly with the fixed €352 Portes du Soleil six-day price.

The exact amount for six ski days depends on which week you choose and when you book it.

Ski hire

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort operates its own rental network and advertises an online discount of up to 15% for advance equipment reservations.

For comparable performance equipment for two adults, we would budget approximately:

Ski hire: €600–€750

Overall, depending particularly on the lift-ticket price secured:

Jackson Hole total: approximately €4,000–€5,250+

Even Jackson Hole can therefore come out around €1,500–€2,800 more than our Morzine example.

How do the four resorts compare?

For a couple planning the same basic holiday – seven nights away with six days skiing – the difference is significant.

That means the difference between Morzine and Aspen can approach:

€4,500 for just two people

*And this comparison doesn’t include flights, airport transfers or other holiday expenditure.

Why does the Portes du Soleil comparison stand out?

The interesting part isn’t simply that Morzine is cheaper. It is how much skiing you get for the money.

For winter 2026/27:

6 days Portes du Soleil = €352 per adult online

For that price you can explore more than 600 km (375miles) of skiing and 12 resorts across two countries.

Compare that with:

Aspen Snowmass: $869 / approximately €744 per adult for six days

and:

Vail: around $615–$726 / approximately €527–€622 per adult for six days, depending on peak-date access

while Jackson Hole’s price varies according to the exact dates and how early you buy.

And then there is ski hire.

Taken together, those differences make a surprisingly large impact on the final cost of the holiday.

A European ski holiday still offers exceptional value

Aspen Snowmass, Vail and Jackson Hole are exceptional ski destinations.

Each has something different to offer and there are plenty of reasons why skiers want to experience them.

But when you compare the actual cost of putting together the same seven-night ski holiday, Morzine and the Portes du Soleil compare remarkably well.

For around €2,500 for two adults, our example combines:

• Seven nights’ accommodation
• Six days skiing across the full Portes du Soleil
• Six days’ ski, boot and pole hire

A comparable holiday in one of these major American resorts can easily reach €4,000–€7,000+ for the same two people.

So when comparing ski holidays, don’t just look at the headline price of the accommodation.

That is where Morzine and the Portes du Soleil really start to stand out.
